Preventative Care

Programs

Let us help keep your pet healthy by bringing him or her in for regular exams and vaccinations.

Dogs and cats age far faster than people, so significant changes in your pet’s health can happen in a short time. Preventative Care (or Wellness) programs allow us to diagnose diseases and conditions early, when they’re easier to treat or manage.

Often, we can help prevent diseases entirely, just by ensuring that your pet has received appropriate vaccinations and preventives. We recommend that healthy adult dogs and cats visit us once a year. Puppies, kittens, senior pets, and pets with health issues or illnesses need more frequent checkups.

We have newly created comprehensive Preventative Health Care plans – Cabbagetown Care – which includes vaccinations and prevention protocols for your pet. These plans are designed to save you money on veterinary services and retail items (such as discounted food) and keep your pet in tip-top shape on an annual basis.

Kitten Wellness

Our Cabbagetown Care kitten wellness program is designed to help get your kitten started on the right path to a long and healthy life. The first few months are a critical period in your kitten’s development, and we can give you the support and tools necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy cat, including information and advice on nutrition, litterbox training, and behaviour.

Schedule your kitten for his or her first exam as soon as possible. Until your kitten has received a series of vaccines, he or she is susceptible to many serious but preventable diseases. We will vaccinate your new pet against rabies and panleukopenia (distemper). Depending on your cat’s risk, we may also advise vaccinating him or her against other diseases, such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). In addition, your kitten will need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are common in young cats.

Most kittens and puppies have roundworms, intestinal worms that can cause coughing, and weight loss, although they may not cause any symptoms. It is important for kittens and puppies to be treated for roundworms, not only to help rid them of the infection but also to prevent you and the rest of your family from becoming infected. Roundworms are a zoonotic parasite, which means they can be transmitted from pets to people.

Puppy Wellness

Our Cabbagetown Care puppy program is designed to help get your puppy started on the right path to a long and healthy life. The first few months are a critical period in your puppy’s development, and we can give you the support and tools necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy dog, including information and advice on nutrition, training, behaviour, and socialization.

Adult and Senior Pet Wellness

Senior Pet Wellness

Once your pet (cat or dog) approaches eight years old, we recommend that they undergo a thorough senior wellness exam and diagnostic work-up. Even though you may believe your pet is normal, there are many disease processes that do not show any outward sign until the disease is quite advanced. More advanced diseases can be more difficult to treat and are not always as responsive to treatment as diseases diagnosed early.

Early detection of diseases such as kidney disease, thyroid disease, etc. will allow us to administer the appropriate treatments to help extend your pet’s life.

Many symptoms that historically have been attributed to old age and considered untreatable are now repairable. For example, some dogs that appear to have lost their mental alertness can be returned to a mental status indicative of a younger age using appropriate therapy.

It would be recommended to have yearly blood work for your elderly pets to help monitor your pets health and also to detect early signs of any kind of illness, such as infections, kidney failure, thyroid and liver disease.

Adult Annual Wellness Exam

We provide diagnostic and wellness services for your adult pet, including, but not limited to blood testing, fecal testing, and urine testing. Every year we detect many disease processes in apparently ‘normal’ adult animals. The results help us address problems in the early stages. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatments can result in your companion living a longer healthier life.
